Contractors and trades / remodeler
One Thursday at a remodeler.
Every free estimate costs half a day. Most of them were never a job.
The scarce thing in this trade is not leads. It is the hours spent standing in kitchens that were never going to sign. A composite day, not a client's records. Nothing here is a measured result.
Time
What happens
What the system does
7:30am
An overnight inquiry. A kitchen, no budget mentioned, and a request to come out and take a look.
Answers, then asks the budget question early and without apology. Nobody has driven anywhere yet.
8:50am
A homeowner says they have about $18,000 and want the kitchen taken back to the studs.
Says what that number does and does not cover here, without insulting it. Cabinets alone move it. They find that out before anybody gives up a Saturday.
10:00am
Somebody asks how long they will be living without a kitchen.
Gives the honest range and says the permit is part of it. Does not promise a date.
11:20am
Somebody wants a bathroom priced without anybody seeing it.
No number given. Says that tile, fixtures, and what is behind the wall each move it, and that the wall is the part nobody can price from a driveway.
1:00pm
A caller asks whether the company will beat a quote they already have.
Says no, in one sentence, and does not ask to see the other quote.
2:40pm
A customer three weeks into a bathroom asks when the tile lands.
Recognized as an existing job. Does not guess at a delivery date. Handed to the person holding the order.
4:15pm
A caller wants a wall taken out and asks whether it is holding anything up.
Will not answer that from a description. Says an engineer or somebody standing in the room decides it, and takes the address.
6:30pm
An inquiry arrives with a photograph of somebody else's kitchen attached.
Answers what it can about the finishes in it, and says plainly that what a picture costs depends on the house it goes into.
8:45pm
Somebody who is really asking whether to move instead of remodel.
Does not talk them out of moving. Says what the work involves and lets an undecided person stay undecided.
He stood in one kitchen today and it was the one worth standing in. The others found out at breakfast rather than after somebody gave up a weekend. Turning work away early is not lost revenue. It is the calendar getting its afternoons back.
Every line here is a composite. It is not drawn from a client's records and no number on this page is a measured result.
